Rainwater Systems Design & Consulting
The rainwater experts
other experts consult.
Architects, engineers, and city planners bring us in early — before construction documents are complete, before value engineering removes the circle from the plan. We help design teams get rainwater collection right from the first drawing.
What we do
Design-phase rainwater expertise
We're the consultants that engineering and architecture firms call when a client asks for a rainwater collection system and they need a real answer — one that accounts for roof area, tank placement, distribution design, pump sizing, and code compliance — before the project goes to bid.
James has been doing this work for over 20 years. Erin brings the systems thinking and project management that turns complex designs into buildable, maintainable solutions. Together, we work nationally with firms that need the right answer the first time.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Here are the top questions our partners ask before getting started.
Who do you work with?
Large architectural firms, site development engineers, civil engineering practices, high-end custom home builders, city planners, conservation professionals, and environmental nonprofits. Our clients are professionals who have been asked to deliver a rainwater collection solution and need a specialist to do it right.
When's the best time to bring you in?
As early as possible — ideally when the idea first comes up, well before 100% construction documents are complete and before the project is sent to bid. Early engagement is the difference between a system that's designed in and one that gets value-engineered out.
What areas do you serve?
We work nationally. While we're based in Central Texas — the most developed rainwater market in the country — we consult on projects across the U.S. and are available for site visits where the project warrants it.
What does an engagement look like?
Most engagements begin with a design consultation — we review your plan set, ask the right questions, and provide guidance on system sizing, tank placement, roof collection strategy, and distribution design. Additional deliverables can be scoped from there based on what the project needs.
Do you work on residential projects?
Yes. Our consulting practice is focused on commercial, institutional, and large-scale residential projects, engaged early in the design phase. But if you have a designed system and you're looking for an installer, or you're a homeowner looking for residential rainwater installation in Central Texas, our sister company, Harvest Rain, is the best rainwater installer in Central Texas and handles residential installation directly.
What information do you need to get started?
In most cases, a preliminary plan set, site layout, or even an early project narrative is enough for an initial consultation. Early conversations are often exploratory - you do not need a fully developed rainwater design before reaching out. That’s exactly where we come in. From there, if it feels like a good fit, we’ll follow up with a written proposal outlining consultation scope and package options.
Do you offer rainwater education or lunch-and-learns for project teams?
Yes. J&E Rainwater Consultants offers rainwater lunch-and-learn presentations for architects, engineers, builders, and related project teams. Topics can range from the fundamentals of potable rainwater harvesting to collection assumptions, storage strategy, code considerarions, and how rainwater systems integrate into the broader design process. We’re also happy to coordinate presentations that may qualify for continuing education credits.
